Andrew Goodwin Music Video Theory

I have chosen the song by Katy Perry Featuring Snoop Dogg - California Girls

Genre Characteristics
Pop/Hip Hop - Having a young white female is a common aspect of a pop song, a fairy tale setting would appeal to the pop audience.

Lyrics and Visuals
There isn't any many links between the lyrics and visuals but as she says popsicles we see lollies and when she says California girls there's shots of half naked girls however this doesn't happen throughout the whole video for example when talks about palm trees and green grass; we only see clouds.

Music and Visuals
As with all music videos they cut to the beat of the music and we see scenes of girls dancing which has been choreographed to match the music.

Demand to promote/sell the artist
There is a strong push to promote Katy Perry in this video as she is in almost all the shots with close up shots of her. There is definate evidence of selling the artist.

Voyeurism
There is a ridiculous use of voyeurism as we see her throughout the whole video in a sexual way. When she is wearing clothes it is very revealing, and she looks into the camera in a seductive way. There is even a scene of her naked on a bed of clouds.

Intertextual Reference
Through the props and location there is a reference to the movie "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". This helps to widen the audience as it is hoped that people that liked the movie would like the video. In addition, it adds to Katy Perrys image as naughty but nice.
